North Carolina: An Introduction

NC ESSENTIAL STANDARDS:

8.G.1.1: Explain how location and place have presented opportunities and challenges for the movement of people, goods, and ideas in North Carolina and the United States.

8.G.1.2: Understand the human and physical characteristics of regions in North Carolina and the United States (e.g. physical features, culture, political organization and ethnic make-up).

8.G.1.3:  Explain how human and environmental interaction affected quality of life and settlement patterns in North Carolina and the United States (e.g. environmental disasters, infrastructure development, coastal restoration and alternative sources of energy).

LEARNING TARGETS:

  1. I can understand the geographical makeup of the state of North Carolina and how that geography has contributed to the development of migration and settlement patterns throughout the state.
  2. I can describe the three regions of North Carolina and their characteristics.
  3. I can tell the difference between primary and secondary sources and explain how can these sources can be affected by the author’s point of view, bias, and personal perspectives.
  4. I can use historical documents to determine connections between past and present.
  5. I can explain what the phrase “historical thinking” means as well as explain what helps to creates an objective understanding of a historical event.

CRITERIA FOR SUCCESS:

  1. I will be able to identify the geographic regions of North Carolina, as well as identify the main geographic features of the state.
  2. I will identify and label major features of the three regions of North Carolina.
  3. I will identify and label the 50 United States of America.
  4. I will be able to explain how the geography of North Carolina contributed to the patterns of migration and settlement, as well as how those patterns impacted the economic and political growth of the state.
  5. I will be able to explain the differences between primary and secondary sources and provide examples of each.
  6. I will be able to explain what the phrase “historical thinking” means and how it relates to our study of North Carolina and United States History.

  3. INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK: Expectation – notebooks is expected to come with you to class DAILY. Use a 1 1/2 inch ring binder notebook. Set up divider tabs into these sections: CLASS NOTES (including handouts and graphic organizers), VOCABULARY, MAPS,and JOURNALGRADING: Your notebook will be checked by the teacher periodically and you will receive a grade. This will be counted as a TEST grade. Keep up with your notebook DAILY; notebook checks will not necessarily be announced ahead of time. PURPOSE: This notebook will contain all of the materials that you will need to study for tests and assessments. HINT: You will need a roll of clear tape so that you can tape items into the notebook pages when necessary.
  4. VOCABULARY: Vocabulary is very important to your understanding of the social studies curriculum this year. Each unit will have a vocabulary list, complete with definitions, that you should SAVE to your DESKTOP. I have also made QUIZLET STUDY SETS that cover this same vocabulary, covered by individual units. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to study these words. The VOCABULARY will be included on UNIT TESTS. We use NCPEDIA/counties to gather data for each county’s information. CHECK YOUR EMAIL FOR CTOD SPREADSHEET. YOU MUST MAKE A COPY OF THIS SPREADSHEET BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO TYPE ON IT!!! 2.) NC COUNTY MAP – NUMBER the county (do not try to write its name) & color code according to region of the state. Make a KEY showing the colors representing: MOUNTAINS, PIEDMONT, AND COASTAL PLAIN. You choose your colors. Let the teacher check your work when finished. ASK QUESTIONS if you do not understand. COTD SPREADSHEET – Remember to make a COPY before you can type on it. We are using GOOGLE DOCS ONLY for this spreadsheet. Use NCPEDIA for your county information. After completing the spreadsheet information, remember to NUMBER the county on your paper MAP. Next, color in the county. You will need to COLOR CODE BY REGION – make a key on your map so that when I look at it I will know what region each county is in based on color alone. Also, CREATE a COMPASS ROSE in the lower RIGHT corner of your map; it will denote the cardinal directions: North, South, East, West. BOTH the spreadsheet and the county map will be completed DAILY.
